Upon graduation from Clemson University, class of 1915, Joseph Allen Patterson, Jr. was the youngest graduate in the history of Clemson at that time.
He married Charlotte Barnwell Brown, and in the early 1900's founded J. Allen Patterson Construction Company.
The earliest accomplishments of his company included laying the first underwater power cable to Parris Island and recognizing the invention of air conditioning as critical for the modern development of Beaufort County. It was Joe Allen's company that installed the first heating and air conditioning system used in Beaufort County. This system was installed at the Sea Island Hotel in the early 1950's.
His son, Joseph Allen Patterson, III (Skeet) joined the business and married Mary Eloise Pike. In the 1960's, the company was reorganized as Patterson Construction, Inc., with Skeet as President. During this period the family business was involved in a wide variety of building projects in Beaufort. Among these projects were The Port Royal Inn, a medical complex at The Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Lady's Island Shopping Center, and the residential neighborhoods in Battery Creek, Lady's Island, Shell Point and Grays Hill.
Skeet and Mary Patterson had five children. Edwin Steven Patterson owns Patterson Construction, Inc., Joseph Allen Patterson IV, owns Patterson Residential, Merritt Patterson, owns Beaufort Construction & Patterson Realty, Russell Patterson, an attorney on Hilton Head Island, and Sandra Watts, a registered nurse. Skeet passed away in 1986 and was followed by Mary in 1991.
Today, Patterson Construction, Inc. serves Beaufort County and surrounding areas with the values that made the company what it is today. Through quality craftsmanship and listening to our clients needs, we are capable of completing both residential & commercial projects ranging in size and scope. No matter the project, we stand behind each finished product.
